During the unusual circumstances, Merryland initiated our remote learning programs, in staggered stages, from 08th March 2020 and the vast majority of parents have expressed immense satisfaction and appreciation for our efforts. Throughout the entire school, we have implemented several online learning platforms and applications suitable to the grade level of each child and we have started live, online engagement sessions with children where practical and feasible. We continue to survey parents and fine-tune this process according to feedback received and are committed to walking alongside our parents and students throughout this entire situation.
Additional staff have been deployed to check, each teacher’s lesson delivery and student responses on a daily basis. We also have dedicated staff to take calls and emails to assist the student and parent issues beyond the scope of a class teacher and all issues made known to us have been and continue to be addressed within a maximum period of 24 -36 hours.
Throughout the entire school, we have implemented many online learning platforms such as ClassDojo, Zoom, HeyMath, LiteracyPlanet, Reading Eggs, Kamkalima, Ireadarabic, Quizziezz and other applications suitable to the grade level of each child. We also have live, online engagement sessions with entire classes, specific groups of students and one to one sessions, where practical and feasible.
We have researched different programs like Seesaw, Cisco Webex, Google Classrooms, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, AdobeConnect, Alef which all provide similar platforms. We know that no two software are quite alike, so a great deal of research and consideration was done before finalising the software to be used. We have taken into account several factors not only including the ease of use, support on all operating systems including Windows, iOS, Android, Chrome OS, the interface, and login ease without having separate emails for students and parents. We have also done case studies based on different devices parents or students may use at home, including tablets, iPads, iPhones, Android phones, other Smartphones, Windows laptops, Chromebooks, etc.
The school has made significant, efforts to obtain the necessary hardware and access for online learning platforms, cloud storage, and videoconferencing tools along with other essential items. Additionally, extensive training has been provided to all staff to ensure they are able to use these tools successfully. Teachers are working extended hours to constantly engage with students and parents during school hours as well as after-school hours to accommodate parent schedules and service availability.
