Declamation Competition – Department of English

Recently, the 45th Presidential elections were held in the United States of America and the speeches given by the notable figures of the nation were watched all around the globe. On those lines, the Department of English thought of giving an opportunity to the students to showcase themselves as erstwhile great leaders of the world, get into their shoes and give a chance to the audience to see history come alive with the famous speeches that had been delivered by them .

The Declamation competition was held for the juniors (Grade 4, 5, & 6) and seniors (Grade 7, 8 & 9) in the English Skills Lab. The participants took the stage with aplomb and their performance was incredible. It reflected the fact that they had well understood that great inspiring speeches are examples of great oratory which have the power to appeal to the sentiments and stir up the emotions of the listeners -emotions of emancipation, patriotism, liberty and the like.

The seniors declaimed the speeches of His Highness Sheikh Zayed, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi while the juniors declaimed the timeless speeches of stalwarts like Jawahar Lal Nehru, John F Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Malala Yousufzai and Barack Obama. They did complete justice to the historic speeches as the audience listened spellbound.

The judges, along with senior English teacher were academic achievers Musa and Shwetha of grade 12 and Hiba Aslam and Dhruv Dodeja, highly competent members of the Literary Club.

Although each of the finalists declaimed marvellously, mention must be made of Zainab Hiba, Zayba, Akram and Michael (from the juniors) and Mahrukh and Menna (from the seniors) who rightly earned the remark “speechless!” by the judges.

The Declamation Competition was indeed “an opportunity to witness some great speeches ever made in the history of mankind”.
