Guidance for parents – Post Cambridge Examination results

Dear Students and Parents,

Following the release of Cambridge results on 11 August, we have received some queries regarding options for candidates who feel that the final grade awarded by Cambridge International was not what they expected.

The grades that teachers submitted were their best assessment of what candidates would have achieved if they had taken exams. However, Cambridge International then applied a four-stage statistical standardisation process so that the distribution of grades awarded this year is consistent with those awarded in other years globally. The final grades awarded by Cambridge are an outcome of this standardisation process.

Cambridge has provided three options if you feel that your results were not what you expected:

Option 1. Candidates may still be able to progress to the next stage of their education or future employment as planned with their grade(s). Contact your school, prospective university/higher education institution or prospective employer to discuss your options.

Option 2. Candidates can retake exam(s) in the November 2020 or June 2021 exam series. Contact your school to discuss your options. Information regarding entry deadlines for the November 2020 series is available on the school website.

Option 3. You can ask your school to request Cambridge for a review of the grades (post-results check) for the candidates in your entry group in the syllabus to check specific parts of their ‘statistical standardisation’ calculations.

However, we do not recommend option 3 because of the following reasons:

  1. The review only checks if the statistical standardisation calculation has been applied correctly.
  2. Cambridge will not review the grade of an individual candidate.
  3. Before we submit a post-results check, all candidates must be told that their syllabus grade will either stay the same, go up, or go down.
  4. By submitting a post-results request to Cambridge, we must confirm we have told each of our candidates this. This implies that the consent of each candidate in the syllabus is required as all their grades could be affected.

While a vast majority of candidates are happy with their grades, some may find them disappointing. We hope that your grades will allow you to progress to the next level of your education. Alternatively, you may choose to retake the exam in November 2020.

Also, please note that grades obtained in AS Level June 2020 will not count towards the final A Level grade which will be calculated only on the basis of A Level components.  So, a good option for AS Level candidates is to focus on getting a better grade in the A level June 2021 exam.
