Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health – A Parent’s Guide

The mental health and emotional wellbeing of children are an essential part of their healthy development. Just as we care for our children’s physical health, it is important to pay attention to their emotional and mental wellbeing and to provide support when they need it.

Merryland International School is pleased to share the “Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health – A Parent’s Guide”, developed by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) as a practical resource for parents and caregivers.

The guide provides helpful information to support parents in:

  • Understanding children’s mental health and wellbeing
  • Recognising common risk and protective factors
  • Distinguishing between typical behavioural changes and possible signs of concern
  • Understanding common mental health challenges affecting children and young people
  • Talking openly and appropriately with children about their feelings and mental health
  • Knowing when professional support may be appropriate
  • Understanding the different professionals who can provide support
  • Preparing for and following up on a mental health consultation
  • Looking after their own wellbeing while supporting their child

The guide also provides additional resources, online support platforms, and information on mental health support services in Abu Dhabi.

We encourage all parents and caregivers to take some time to read this guide. Early awareness, open communication, a supportive family environment, and seeking appropriate help when needed can make an important difference to a child’s wellbeing.
